1976: Jesse Lucas Gardella was born to a mother he never met and an absentee father in Seattle, Washington on June 20, 1976. He was given up for a closed adoption at a week old and was legally adopted by Carrie Anne Gardella and Elizabeth Hayes in July of 1976 and a short time later the family of three moved to Aberdeen, Washington where they settled down. Carrie Anne and Elizabeth chose a closed adoption because of the circumstances surrounding Jesse's birth mother. All that was known was that she was a drug addict and that she had a violent past. The women didn't want their son exposed to that lifestyle should she come looking for her him. His safety was their top priority. It was another reason why they moved from Seattle to Aberdeen.

1976-1981: As a child Jesse was raised in a loving home that allowed for a lot of free spirited play and creativity. He was exposed to both male and female toys and was allowed to play with whatever he wanted. At age five Jesse understood that playing with both GI Joe and Barbie wasn't a bad thing and it helped to shape him into a much kinder adolescent. As he grew up he had a deeper understanding of people's emotions and needs, despite being bullied relentlessly for having two mothers.

1982-1988: At age 12 Jesse engaged in his first fist fight. The onset of his blind rage seemingly came out of nowhere and Carrie Anne was concerned enough to take him to a therapist, where he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a blanket term for having a mental illness in those days. As he entered his teenage years his behavior went from violent to strange, causing Carrie Anne and her wife to seek further help for their son. Jesse was put on medication and things subsequently got better for a long stretch of time.

1989-2006: By the time Jesse was 13 he knew he wanted to be in some branch of law enforcement. Unable to join the Marine Corps due to his mental illness, he graduated high school early, at age 17, and attended Rutgers University in New Jersey where he received his bachelor's in criminology. After Rutgers and with an interest leaning more toward politics than law enforcement at that point, he received his master's in political science from MIT and worked as an intern for the mayor of Boston. Unsure where he was going to end up in the long run and with a strong sense of wanderlust, he applied to the Training Division of the Chicago PD and was accepted as an officer-in-training. When he completed the program, he was offered a job as a rookie police officer and eventually advanced to that of an officer.

2005: While feeling particularly rogue during one of his as of then undisclosed manic episodes, he was shot on the job after engaging a criminal on the street without calling for backup. This was a stupid move as he soon learned (and was reprimanded for accordingly). However, being shot landed him in the same trauma center that Emma was working in at the time, and he was instantly fixated on her. His hospital stay lasted about a week and by the time he was ready to go home, he'd acquired her phone number and e-mail address. Three months later he took her on their first date and they've been together steadily ever since.

2006: In early 2006, shortly after being shot, Jesse retired from the Chicago PD and sought government employment. It was something he'd always taken an interest in but hadn't ever considered having a shot at doing given how competitive and rare it is to acquire such employment without experience. Being on the force allowed him to build up an impressive resume along with his decorated education and he submitted his intensive application to Quantico to be considered as a possible secret service trainee. Six months later he was accepted and after another several long months of background checks and investigations, he was summoned to Virginia to complete his 20 week secret service agent training.
